Memories of Balham Prefabs

There were prefabs in Cloudesdale Road, London, SW17 up until the 1960s when small blocks (3 storeys) of flats were built in their place (Elmfield Road end). The original buildings in the road were Victorian terraced houses which I understand were bomb damaged during WW2. I recall playing on some rubble there in the early ‘60s with young friends so think there must still have been the remains of a bomb site amongst the prefabs.

  • I have memories of a childhood weekend staying in a prefab in Balham in the mid to late 1950’s with a family we’d met on a caravan holiday. My memory sees it as dark and like a bomb site with big old buildings around. I remember a night time visit to the bathroom and seeing what seemed to be the shadow of a monkey on the windowsill outside and screaming.
