LOWER JACKWOOD CLOSE SE9
My family moved into 59 Lower Jackwood Close when I was 3 months old. We lived in Lambeth and moved here in 1947. My father told me about the deep snow that year and how he took my pram to collect coal to keep our prefab warm. I have attached photos of my parent in our garden which my father loved. He won many front garden prizes which the council awarded for his floral displays. I have also attached a photograph of our Coronation street party in 1953. Many of the children in the picture were good friends of mine for many years growing up. I have made contact with one family Eileen Prosser who was Jolin who lived at 62 four doors away from me. Other families I remember are the Elliot’s, Morphy, Lazelles, Brooks, Peaks, Stitson, Perry, Crudge, Halls, Haggetty , Antoniadis and Basildon. I have happy memories living in Lower Jackwood Close, sadly we were one of the last families along with the Peaks to move out of the street before it was demolished in 1961/62.

  • I lived in Lower Jackwood Close for a couple of years 1957-58 with my family before migrating to Australia. Happy childhood hanging out with a few other kids from the street, playing in the woods and the park, ranging up to Shooters Hill, crawling through “the rhodies” (ancient rhododendrons in what had been the garden of an old ruin at the edge of the park), collecting lizards, frogs and newts as well as plenty of bumps and scrapes. Went to Deansfield school, with headmaster J Z Flello, who could easily have been a character from a Dickens novel.

It was a lovely place to live with the park and woods all around us. I have such happy memories x
