  • Thelma Byrne on “Weir Houses” were built at Sankeys. Taking over 100 hours to erect they were sent to badly bombed areas to replace destroyed housing. Named after Lord Weir whose Scottish company was also involved in the manufacture of prefabricated housing. Some were built locally and occupied by workers from Sankeys (called Weir Gardens)(now demolished).
